Apr. 09, 1980 - The Welsh guards parade to say farewell to rats: At Elizabeth Barracks, Pirbright Camp, Brookwood Woking, Surrey, today the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards were on parade to say farewell to Rats the crossbred (Oorgie/Terrier?) who has been retired on verterinary advice, Rats is thought to be 8 years old and much of his life has been spent with the roulement Companies in Crossmaglen South Armagh, Norther Ireland. In December last year he was awarded the Pro dogs Gold medal for the Dog most Devoted to Duty and was given leave to return to London for the presentation. During his service in Crossmaglen, Rats always attached himself to the patrol Commander and never left the patrols even when they came under fire. As a result he on one occasion was shot at and on two occasions wounded by car bombs. He has four pieces of car metal still in his body. He has also been hit twice by cars receiving head and leg injuries. His favourite activity was to join Patrols in the countryside and over the years he developed a great love of helicopters and unprompted was always first to get aboard and the first out when landing. Now for health reasons the vet has decided to retire him to this country for his remaining years, so after the inspection he left as he wanted to in a helicopter. Photo shows Rats seated in the helicopter as he says farewell to the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards at Pirbright today
