Dec. 21 Miss Lotte Reiniger at work on her latest film, The Magic Horse'. Using a pair of sharp pointed scissors, miss Reiniger moves one of the limbs a fraction of an inch photographs it and then moves it again. Silhouette Film Pioneer Makes Films For Children's Television: Back in 1910 Miss Lotte Reiniger made the first sihouette film of all time and ever since she has been working at it and perfecting this fascinating form of film making. she is now working on a series of films which will be shown on Children's Television at the studio at the Abbey Arts Center at Barnet. Miss Reiniger designs all her figures herself, having made a rough sketch of the outline she cuts it out of thinning black cardboard with nail scissors. Each limb is cut separately and joined to the others by wire hinges, These are then laid on the trick table against scenery and backgrounds cut from black cardboard and various layers of white se-transparent tissue paper (variation of layers give shades of off-white gray and lends depth) and to achieve animation each limb is moved a fraction of an inch and photographed by the camera which is suspended above her head. Fr each tiny movement a different exposure is needed. The space between camera and trick table is never varied distance being achieved by the use of smaller or larger figures. As most of her films are made for children, Miss Reiniger always tries out a new story on her little friends to note their reactions before finally deciding to film it
