Anna Massey, Corin Redgrave and wife deirdre, libel case

Feb. 02, 1968 - Impresario In Libel Case; Theatrical impresario Emile Littler faces four libel actions over a letter written after four stars had given notice of leaving his production The Right Honourable Gentleman at Her Majesty's Theatre in 1965. The four stars were Anthony Quayle, Coral Browne, Anna Massey and Corin Redgrave - son of Sir Michael Redgrave. Mr Littler was sued for damages for libel by London Artists Ltd (agents for the four players), the Grade Organisation (which wholly owns London Artists), Mr. Lew Grade and Associated Television Ltd, which controlled Her Majesty's Theatre, where the play was running. Mr. Littler denied libel. Mr. Desmond Ackner, QC, for London Artists, has alleged to Mr. Justice Cantley and the jury that in the letter Mr. Littler assumed without inquiry that the stars had allowed themselves to be used wrongly in a plan to bring the play's year-long run to an end so that ATV, his landlords, could get possession of the theatre.
