Anne Firman, Gerald Selby, kiss in car, indecency case
May 05, 1959 - Kiss in a car couple cleared.: An engaged couple accused of indecency in a car, were found not guilty yesterday and discharged. The couple, Anna Firman, 23, and her fiance, 29-years old Mr. Gerald Selby had denied committing an act of lewd, obscene and disgusting nature while the car was in a cul-de-sac at Ennismore Gardens, Kensington. Selby told the court he and Miss Firman had stopped for a chat and a kiss before going to pick up his fiancee's parents from a theatre. Their counsel told the Jury: This is a case where public dignity has been outraged. Counsel, Mr. J.T Molony, QC, accused the police of lying and added If Perjury is the word that should be used I don't shrink from using it. I am content that you should judge this case on the basis that the two police officers in the case are lying. The couple, who met last September and became engaged on Boxing day, planned to wed in July. But their joint saving of 500 went to pay the bill for their defence.
