Jul. 07, 1961 - Benn case heard in high court today: The controversial reluctant peer case took a new turn today when a special Election court in the Law Courts in London began hearing an action brought by Malcolm St. Clair, the Conservative who was defeated in the Bristol South-East by-election by Mr. Anthony Wedgwood Benn, Viscount Stansgate. Mr. St. Clair is asking the court to determine whether Mr. Benn, who inherited his father's peerage, may sit in the House of Commons. Mr. Benn has refused to accept the peerage and stood as a Labour candidate in the Bristol by-election which he won. Later he was refused the right to sit in the House Today's case may well be the last battle in the reluctant peer's fight to continue as an MP.
