Anti-locust spraying aircraft demonstration, Northolt

Jul. 07, 1970 - Anti-Locust Aircraft Demonstration at Northolt Airport. A new twin-engined islander spraying aircraft manufactured by Britten-Norman Ltd of Bembridge Airport, Isle of Wight, and worth 48, 000, was demonstrated at Northolt Aerodrome today. Funds were made available by the Ministry of Overseas Development from a grant of 175, 000 covering the provision of personnel, aircraft and equipment to fight against the locust plague in East Africa. The aircraft was on Aeridology taking place in London as part of the Silver Kennington. The plane will shortly be presented to the headquarters at Asara in Ethiopia. With its ability to take off and land in short distances in rough country, the Islander is particularly suitable for spraying operations against locusts. It has been fitted with the latest spray gear and the designs and specifications are the outcome of many years of research on locust spraying techniques by scientists from many countries.
