May 16, 1955 - National Gallery Admits Painting is a fake.: A painting given to the National Gallery as a masterpiece 30 years ago has been exposed as a fake. Sir Philip Hendy, the Gallery director said: (illegible) As a masterpiece it was worth £10, 000 What (illegible) value is now I cannot say.
