Nov. 11, 1959 - The Pied Piper Is Unveiled At Camberwell Sir Isaac Hayward, Leader of the London County Council, today unveiled The Pied Piper of Hamelin, a mural in concrete which has been designed by Mr. Willi Soukop and with the help of two building workers, formed into an external wall of the tenants clubroom at Elmington estate, Camberwell, in South East London. The cost of this mural has been provided by the L.C.C. under its £20, 000 a year scheme for the acquisition or commissioning of works of art as features of housing schemes, parks, road improvements, schools etc. Robert Browning, who wrote the poem The Pied Piper of Hamelin, was born in Camberwell in 1812 and had strong associations with the Borough.
