Jan. 09 Designer Arnold Taylor, nearing 70 and can't retire until someone can be found to replace him, at his work desk. At home he paints a variety of subjects but never saucy pictures. His imagination and humour show no signs of drying up. Who is it that keeps the menfolk staring at the saucy pictures while man does the rest of the shopping? The answer is to be found in the small Yorkshire town of Holmfirth, the home of the family firm of Bamforth for more than 100 years and still under the founder's grandson. There, works a respectable middle-aged mischievous artist called Arnold Taylor, the master of the rude joke! Censorship for postcards do exist but the firm has its own rules - honest vulgarity but not pornography! People are harder to shock today so the joke and design has to be even franker. Taylor still succeeds and there is only one other rival in the business which has room for two. There is a flourishing export business to English-speaking countries where this type of simple direct vulgar humour is appreciated as much as at Margate, Blackpool, and indeed at almost any stationers shop today
