Feb. 29 A friend of animals..: Quite a special friend of animals is Karl-Heinz Spielau (picture). Though he also is good friend with the living four-legged animals - as sheep dog Wolf at his side is demonstrating - the specialty of the 30 years old man from hamburg/West Germany are pottery animals, which he produces himself. Being trained decorator, he quite fortunately got his new profession: One day he saw a beautiful, but most expensive, pottery lion and began to reflect, how one could produce it cheaper. he started working. Of course it didn't go smoothly from beginning. His tigers, panthers and cheetahs, which he produced out of plaster lime and other ingredients, were not quite similar in every respect. But Karl-Heinz Spielau went trying and one day he had found the right material and the right forms. Today he even produces Beethoven busts and Greek sculptors and his works are not only sold in the federal republic, but also in Sweden and America
