Apr. 17 Final touches for Norwich's unique new Library: The final touches are being put to the new Public Library of Norwich which is thought to be unique in style in this country. Designed by the City Architect, Mr.David Percival, it is built like a cloister round a central courtyard. On the south side there is a lending library, and on the east, a news room with vast class windows from floor to ceiling. The north side consists of a reference room, with accommodation for students, donated libraries and a collection of records of local history. The west side is eight storeys high, the five upper floors used for storing books, and the ground floor leading to a memorial in the inner courtyard to the men of the 2nd Air Division of the 8th United States Air Force who flew from East Anglian bases during the last war. On the walls of the entrance hall there is a series of five large mosaics depicting the story of the recording of knowledge. Designed by mosaics expert Laurel Cooper, o local artist, the works will show Assyrian cueiform, Egyptian hieroglyphics, mediaeval illuminating, the early printing press and the librarian and child of today. Mrs. Cooper is also designing a mosaic to be part of the bottom of a pool, which with a pebble garden and a fountain, will form the memorial Stones and minerals have been sent from each of the fifty States of America to make up the pebble garden, and some of them will be included in the pool mosaic.
