Housewife Dorothy Guthrie, of Battle Hill, Hexham, put he foot in it - so did her art master, Bill Kemp, art master at Hexham Grammar school and lecturer at Tynedale art school. For they made their footprints on the paint - smeared card board side of a toilet - paper box. And in a couple of hours, 43-years old Dorothy turned them into one of the North east's best paintings of the year. A few quick smears of paint, and Dorothy had produced Crossing the Red Sea'. When a Bill Saw it, he devised her: Put it up for the art gallery: Dorothy laughed - and agreed. But she was surprised to find her painting on a toilet paper carton has been given a place poof honour in there exhibition by the Federation of Northern Art Societies in Newcastle upon Tyne's ;Laing Art Gallery. But she was shocked when she heard that Bill and herself had really put their feet in it. For the secretary of another art club at Haydon Bridge, Mr. Arthur Vharlton, had demanded an emergency meeting of the artists Federation.
