Dec. 12, 1960 - The Gloomy Cavalier Fetches182, 000: The hitherto unrecorded Franz Hals painting which has been called The Gloomy Cavalier was sold at Sotheby's this afternoon for the record figure of182, 000. It is said to be an even finer work than the famous Laughing Cavalier by the same artist. It was sold by Major D.J. Warde-Aldam a landowner whose family has owned it for more than 100 years.
