May 05, 1964 - New Cross for Ely Cathedral: The four feet high altar cross which will be the focal point for tens of thousands of worshipers and sightseers who visit Ely Cathedral. the cross has been made jointly by Graham Sutherland and architect goldsmith Louis Osman over the past three years. A substantial part of the cost of the Cross - several thousand pounds-is being met by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, the balance being bet by public subscription. Photo shows the detail work on the cross, showing the suspended central square of dull roughly-hewn silver, modelled like a wall, the forward curving petals or flames of highly burnished silver and the curved projecting form of matt black Niello enamel on silver on which the final Crucifix figure of fine cast fold hangs, the twisted body of an ascending Christ, it's bones clad more in spirit than in flesh
