1965 - Bust of Police Hero for Carlisle Cathedral, A stone bust of police hero Constable George Russell, who - was shot dead at Oxenholme (Westmoreland) in February being made at Carlisle Cathedral, was completed yesterady. The bust is to get a piece of honour among ancient kings and bishops at the Cathedral, where Constable Russell, 35, was given a civic funeral. It is being hewn out of red sandstone by Ted Drinkwater (in picture), a foreman mason, and will be put in its place in the 12th. century cathedral. The tribute was the idea of the cathedral architect, Mr. Norman Phillips, and the cost will be included as part of the renovation of the cathedral. Mr. Drinkwater has been working from a collection of photographs of Constable Russell. They were given to him by Mrs. Joan Russell, the dead man's widow, who lives with her two children at Springfield Road, Harraby, Carlisle
