Jan. 01, 1965 - Van Dyck masterpiece discovered in ancient castle Elizabeth- Countess of Arundel - 1635.: A van Dyck masterpiece was discovered in the 100 room - twelfth century Greystoke Castle, Cumberland - ancestral home of Mr. Stafford Howard - relative of the Duke of Norfolk. The discovery was made by Mr. Oliver Miller - Deputy Surveyor of the Queen's pictures when he visited the castle - ancestral home of the Howard family since the days of Edward the Confessor for generations the painting - portrait of Elizabeth, Countess of Arundel - has hung in the castle - but it was believed to be only a copy. The painting was dated 1649 - but restoration revealed that it was painted in 1635 by Van Dyck. It is now valued at many thousands of pounds - and it has been fully restored and hangs in the castle.
