Jun. 06, 1964 - Unveiling of Memorial to Pioneer Airmen at London Airport.: The RT. Hon. A.T. Lennox-Boyd the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation this morning unveiled the memorial at London Airport to the pioneer airmen Sir. John Alcock and Sir Arthur Whitten Brown. The ceremony was organised by Lord Brabazon of Tara President of Royal Acro club - and today is the thirty-fifth anniversary of the arrival in Ireland of a Alcock and Brown at the end of their non-stop crossing of the Atlantic in a Vickers Vimy aircraft. The memorial is the wwrk of Mr. William McMillan R.A. and the cost is £5, 000 mainly from public subscription, and has been placed on a temporary site adjacent to the marshalling apron of the airport where it can be seen by visitors arriving form overseas. At the end of 1955 it will be transferred to a permanent site in the new Central Air Terminal.Alcock and Brown were the world's first men to make a non-stop crossing of the Atlantic from Newfoundland to Ireland in 1919 - in 16 hours 12 min.
