Nov. 11, 1966 - Paintings found under wallpaper are 500 years old; Religious paintings found under six layers aging wallpaper in a tiny Hertfordshire cottage have been identified as pro-Reformation catholic wall paintings, near 500 years old. They are in a remarkably good state of preservation. The discovery has now been described by Sir Albert Richardson, President of the Royal Academy as unique and the paintings as extremely rare and of such importance that they should be preserved and shown to the public. The cottage, one of a row of four in the Village of Piccotts End, near Hemel Hempstead, has been graded and Ancient Mcnument by the Ministry of Works. The man who made this incredible discovery, a 41 year old bachelor garage proprietor has decided that even if he can get n o official assistance he will spend something like700 to be able to open the cottage and its wall paintings to the public, he hopes, next April.
