Nov. 27, 1967 - 7th Century Gold Cross Sold For ? An Angle-Saxon gold cross turned up in March 1967 on the Batchelor (peas) estate near Maidstone, Kent, was sold at Sotheby today for ?5000. Found on a Tuesday, it was lost on Wednesday and found again on Thursday during harrowning. Handed over to the police, it was ruled not to be Treasure Trove at an inquiry at Tonbridge in June - and was sent for sale by Messrs. H.D. Btchelor and Sons. The cross is 2 1/2 inches long and dates back to the early 7th. century A.D. It was found by ploughman Peter Beer and farm labourer Basil Wright. As it was found on Mr. Hubert Batchelor's land - the coroner's jury at Tonbridge decided he was the rightful owner. But he agreed that the finders will share in the proceeds.
