Oct. 10, 1966 - Portrait Of A Naval Officer Sketch Discovered To Be Of Nelson: An oil sketch catalogued as Portrait of a Naval Officer, by Sir William Beechey, bought for under200 at Benham's earlier this year, has been discovered to be a study - almost certainly from life - of Nelson. The discovery was made by the St. James's Street dealer, Hugh Leggatt, and his colleagues. As auctioned it was in shocking condition - both dirty and over-painted. But cleaning showed it to be in remarkably good order. It's impossible to value it. -says Hugh Leggatt. Beechey was a close friend of Beechey. A full-length portrait of Nelson by Beechey, for which this is the sketch, hangs in St. Andrew's Hall, Norwicj. Leggatt's will be showing their find from October 21 for three weeks, after which it will go on loan indefinitely to the National Portrait Gallery.
