Mar. 08, 1971 - Mural composed on wood and nails: It took nearly 20, 000 nails to complete Edward Bawden's mural, which is made mainly in wood and nails, and while it was being completed he exhausted the supplies of nails in Saffron Walden and had to move into Cambridge. The mural, which Mr. Bawden has designed for the new Carr's Lane Congregational Church in Birmingham, is on display at Saffron Walden Museum, before it travels north to its new home. Mr. Bawden, of Park Lane, Saffron Walden, has designed three murals for the church - there are two smaller round ones which will be displayed on either side of the large one - and they will be hung in the entrance hall. This is about the 20th mural Mr. Bawden has designed - one of his works was displayed in the British pavilion at Expo 66 in Montreal. I had three men to help me with the banging in of the nails, he said. Two of them have been working on it full-time since Christmas. I am afraid I didn't knock in very many myself.
