Dec. 12, 1971 - An Original Rubens Found in a church in Augsburg: An altar painting in the Heilig Krouz church in Augsburg presumed to be the work by an unknown artist was recently restored and turned out to be a genuine Rubans! The work had been painted over in the 18th and 19th century and was no longer recognisable as the master's creation. The painting, restored by the Doerner Institute in Munich, shows the ascension of our lady, and it is estimated that it was commssioned in 1626 by the abbot of the monastery of Augsburg and delivered the same year. Even an invoice for the transport from Antwerp to Augsburg amounting to 20 guilders and 48 groats could be found! The restored masterpiece was hung again in its old place in the church of Augsburg (our picture)
