Jun. 06, 1975 - Victoria Cross Group of Four Medals Sold for, 500 A New Zealand victoria Cross group of four medals were sold at Sothesby's today for, 500. the medals were awarded to Lt. Col. Frederick augustus Smith of the 43rd. Light Infantry (later amalgamated with the OX and Bucks Light Infantry which in its run has been absorbed into the Green Jackets). Smith was born in Dublin, served in the Crimea, and sailed to New Zealand with his regiment in 1863. In Paril 1864 he fought the Maoris at Touranga with great bravery - in spite of being badly wounded he commenced hand to hand battle - and was awarded the V.C. He was also awarded the New Zealand Medal dated 1863-4. Although the New Zealand Wars carried on for 21 years (1845-66), there were very few V.C.'s awarded in New Zealand and this group is the first to appear on the market for many years.
