Feb. 19, 1976 - February 19th 1976 The oldest rose in the world found sealed into a wall at Romsey Abbey An 856-year old rose has been discovered hidden inside a wall at Romsey Abbey. Botanists and archaeologists believe it may have been placed in the wall of Romney Abbey, Hampshire as a romantic gesture by one of the masons who built it. The wisened flower now light brown was discovered by workmen in a niche which had been plastered over. It was taken to London for conservation treatment at the Natural History Museum.
