Furthermore, x- rays of the picture show that it is painted on top of a bust length portrait of a bearded man with a ruff, which may also be the work of the brothers Le Nain. Louis Le Nain and his two brothers were 17th century French painters who frequently collaborated in their pictures. They were well knowns portraitists, although few of their portraits survive.
