Jan. 14, 1975 - Angola: Two papers turn their attention to events in Africa. The Times examines the declaration of independence by the local liberation movement in Cabinda which it says is another indication both of Angola's disintegration and of increasing involvement by outside powers in its spreading civil war. Referring to the enclave's income, The Times says independence would put its eighty thousand residents in the oil sheikhdom class. The paper concludes: To hold it and milk it is strategically vital to (the Russian-armed, Russian-backed) MPLA, if, as seems increasingly likely, (its leader) Dr Neto is determined that his party shall be the only one to inherit Angola from Portugal however long the costly war goes on. The Marxist African Nationalist parties have not only got a grip on the vitals of Angola, but also control the newly independent states of Sao Tome and Principe, and the Cape Verde Islands, soon to be merged with Guinea Bissau. This is as promising an outlook for the Russian navy as it must be depressing for NATO and embarassingly enhance the West's dependence on South Africa's facilities.
