Anzio pleasure steamer capsized near Mablethorpe

1966 - Ten drown aboard pleasure steamer: Ten men aboard a pleasure steamer died in a North Sea gale yesterday, only 500 yards from safety. Rescue teams on sand dunes near Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire, watched helplessly as the 216 ton Anzio capsized in mountainous seas after hitting an underwater sandbank. Hurricane force winds prevented rocket firing lifelines from reaching the Anzio. And because of the huge waves a lifeboat was unable to get alongside the ship. The 58 year old Anzio was sailing from Tilbury, Essex, after a refit, to Scotland where it was to have operated a summer pleasure trip service between Inverness and Invergordon.
