Anzio pleasure steamer capsized near Mablethorpe

1966 - Ten Drown Aboard Pleasure Steamer. Ten men aboard a pleasure steamer died in a North Sea gale yesterday, only 500 yards from safety. Rescue teams in sand dunes near Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire, watched helplessly as the 216-ton Anzio capsized in mountainous seas after hitting an underwater sandbank. Hurricane-force winds prevented rocket-firing lifelines from reaching the Anzio. And because of the huge waves a lifeboat was unable to get alongside the ship. The 58-year-old Anzio was sailing from Tilbury, Essex, after a refit, to Scotland, where it was to have operated a summer pleasure trip service between Inverness and Invergordon.
