April Ashley

Feb. 02, 1970 - April Ashley's marriage void because she is not a woman'. Sex-change model April Ashley, yesterday heard a divorce court judge rule that she is not a woman for the purposes of marriage, but she is a biological male and has been so since birth. The judge ruled that Miss Ashley's marriage to Mr. Arthur Cameron Corbett, 50-year old heir to lord Rowallen, was void. Miss Ashley was born George Jamieson in Liverpool in 1935 and underwent a sex-change operation by a Casablanca doctor in 1960. Her marriage to Mr. Corbett, son of a former Cheif Scout, was in Gibraltar in September, 1963. Mr Justice Ormrod - who is also a doctor - said in his written judgement that he was the first English judge ever called upon to decide an individual's sex.
