Feb. 26 San Diego, Calif. Aug. 19 -- The World's most efficient seawater desalting plant was dedicated here today by the U.S. Department of Interior, Office of Saline Water, marking a major milestone in the history of desalting. Built by Aqua Chem Inc. of Waukesha, Wis. the 1, 000, 000 gallon per day plant produces fresh water from the Pacific Ocean with an efficiency that is twice that of any plant now in operation -- supplying 20 pounds of fresh water for every pound of steam required to heat the water to evaporation temperature. The plant adjoins the San Diego Gas and Electric Co. whose steam driven generator also supplies the heat sources for desalting
