Feb. 29 In Old Santa Fe: State Capital Of New Mexico, Last Of The 48 States To Join The Union. Santa Fe: America's Newest-Oldest Capital Gives Its Name To A Style Of Architecture Pecullarly Its Own: Home Of Adobe Building': New Mexican architecture reflects its history and culture, and is based on materials and forms indigenous to the State. First buildings evolved by early inhabitants who had lived there for unknown centuries, were of materials of neighbouring deserts and mountains. Walls were either of stone of adobe - which was cast or puddled into place in walls in stratified layers, which were then finished with smooth costing of adobe inside and out. Roofs were supported by Virgin - round legs 6 or 8 inches in diameter, laid across the tops of opposite walls at regular intervals. Over these were put smaller poles at right angles on which long grasses or rushes and small bronches were laid closely, and over all was spread a thick layer of mud. Outside influences were later seen, such as protecting cornices of brick in ornamental pattern, nand us of lime staces. Shutters, slender squared columns, portal parapets and wood trims were added, producing a type similar to Monterey, Caif style, but still fundamentally New Mexican in character. During early 20th century, ancient tradition forms came into their own with realization that sethetic values meant something as well as being suited to the climate. Today they are adapted to modern materials and have been called The Santa Fe style to be seen where else in the United States. It is a style traceable in descent in unbriken line from aboriginal American sources
