1969 - The new Coventry.: Boys will be boys in any country in the world, and in spite of the ever watchful police, they enjoy their new game of sliding down the smooth bannisters of the stairways in the Precincts. Coventry - Fifteen years after.: On the night of November 14th, . 1940, horror death and destruction visited the industrial city of Coventry. In this and later raids, 67, 670 houses were damaged and 5, 000 totally destroyed as well as shops, factories and the City's beloved Cathedral. The City Council determined that the new Coventry should be a beautiful and convenient City, and now fifteen years after, much of the work of re-building has been completed. The vast damage in the centre of the city gave the Council the opportunity to plan boldy to provide a beautiful square, a fine setting for its new Cathedral, a civic processional way and a unique shopping precinct where ground and first floor shopping is provided and traffic is not allowed to enter. Blocks of shops and offices have straight, clean lines, a model of good, modern urban planning, blending in with what survived of the ancient historical city. At the same time, houses and blocks of flats are rising in the suburbs outside the city to house the workers in Coventry's many industries (chiefly motor cars) whose factories are now sited as far as possible outside the centre of the City
