The Net Result is Safety: With a safety net below them, 200ft above the River Mersey, England, men work on the steel girders of the new and a half million Runcorn-Widnes Bridge. Weighing about 1/14th of their equivalent is sisal, the nets are of braided nylon which has a breaking load of 500 lb. About 80of them are being used on the bridge which will be the largest single-arch bridge in Europe. Its main span is 1, 082ft long and its highest point rises to 280 ft above the river.
