Jun. 06, 1965 - Axed British Railway Station becomes a Luxury Penthouse: It is a luxury push button life for Jim Fewster, the man who was turned a British Railway throwaway village station into a penthouse paradise. Yesterday 57 year old Jim and his wife Isobel surveyed the results of years of planning and ten months of reconstruction. For almost 100 years the tiny stone built station on the fringe of the whistle stop calls for the two-up and two-down passenger trains a day on the single track between hexham and the border junction of Riccarton. It was the coal and the goods depot too for supplies to hundreds of lonely farms in the valley. then the farmers got cars, agricultural merchants got lorries, rail traffic dried up and in 1958 came the beeching axe. When the station shutters finally went up, Jim stepped in with an offer to buy. He hadn't much competition as others were not interested. Jim a director of six companies has now turned this old station into a luxury penthouse with press-button services in every room.
