Sep. 07, 1965 - Restoration work continues on West Minister Abbey interior in preparation for it's 900th. Anniversary year.: Work on the restoration and maintenance of West Minister Abbey is continues and the whole of the interior has been cleaned by washing the stonework removing corrosive grime, restoring by repainting and regilding much of the original colour. The main work that has been going on in recent years has been the repairing of the roofs and the renewal of the lead. All this work has taken about ten years and its completion coincides with it's 900th. Anniversary year, on Tuesday, December 29th, 1965. Commemorative medals in gold, silver and bronze are to be struck for the Abbey's 900th. anniversary, and will be on sale to personal customers at the Abbey bookshop. Gold medals will be 21/4 inches in diameter, and they will be limited to 900 numbered specimens, in 22 - carat gold, and will cost ?100. Silver medals will cost ?5 and bronze ?2 - 10. Another of the commemorative articles is a superb plate in spde China and 100 - year old copper engraving has been used in the design. Photo shows the Rev. Eric S. Abbott, the Dean of West Minister, holding the design - the work of Michael Rizzello, from which the medals will be struck - showing the reverse and obrv sides. The obrv side shows West Minister Abbey from the West end, and on the reverse the heads are of ten people who, throughout the nine hundred years, contributed in thrir various spheres - as M narch - to the making of West Minister Abbey as 1 is today.
