1971 - Start on heathrow Tube: Mr. Desmond Plummer, leader of the Greater london Council, steppimg from a tracked excavator yesterday after cutting the first sod 200 yards west of Hatton Cross to mark the beginning of work for the construction of London Transport's 3 1/2-mile15 million Underground link with Heathrow Airport. When work is completed in about 4 1/2 years time, tube travel from Heathrow to the West london Air Terminal, gloucester Road, will take 30 minutes. Coach travel now takes at least 40 minutes. The extension will mean direct access for air travellers to the Underground network
