May 05, 1976 - Its An Old Japanese Custom. In general the Japanese sleep on a futon or padded quilt, placed on the tatami or springy straw mats of their rooms. It is very comfortable, and you cannot fall out of bed. When the weather is fine, the quilt are hung out of windows to dry, as they are filled with cotton, and to air. When they are taken in, the futons are stowed away in cupboards made for the purpose, and the bedroom becomes a living-room with no chairs, as one sits on cushions. There is also a low table, the inevertable TV and nothing else.
