Oct. 10, 1955 - Ban in Oxi day parades start-day rioting in Nicosia: Because of the situation in Cyprus, the annual Oxi day parades, which marks the entry of Greece into the war, were banned this year. But after the Greek church had finished their thanksgiving services, crowds of youths, carrying the Greek flag, marched into Metaxas Square, Nicosia, and touched off a full day of rioting. Cyprus police, assisted by British troops wearing gas masks, cleared street after street with tear gas and baton changes against a hall of stone and catapults, used by the mobs.
