Oct. 10, 1955 - Ban on Oxi Day Parades Starts All Day Rioting in Nicosia Because of the situation in Cyprus, the annual Oxi Day parades, which marks the entry of Greece into the War, were banned this year. But after the Greek churches finished their thanksgiving services, crowds of youths carrying the Greek Flag, marched into Metaxas Square, Nicosia, and touched off a full day of rioting. Cyprus Police assisted by British Troops, wearing gas masks, cleared street after street with tear gas and baton charges against a hail of stones and catapults, used by the mobs.
