Feb. 26 Polonezkoy, Poland-In-turkey In the wild flower grown garden of the Church of the Virgin of Czestochowa at Polonezkoy, stands monument to one of the giants of slav literature, Poland's champion of liberty and her national poet, Adam Mickiewicz. In 1855, when emigre Poles -the Ottoman Cossacks of General Mehmet Sadik Pasha Czajkowski - and the Sultan fought together against the Tsar, Mickiewicz came to Turkey to rouse the spirits of Polish patriots. Mickiewicz died of the cholera at Istanbul - then called Constantinople-and never again saw the Poland he yearned for in years of wandering exile. After lying in state at Istanbul, the poet's body was carried first to Paris, the back to his native Poland
