Sep. 09, 1961 - Former Leaders of Turkey - Sentenced to death Menderes - Bayer and Zorlu: The findings of the Special Court sitting at Yassiada Island, Turkey -following the trail of Turkish leaders -were made known today. Former President Celal Bayer (77); former prime minister Mr. Menderes and former foreign minister Mr. Zorlu were among the thirteen former Turkish leaders were sentenced to dis for violation of the Turkish constitution'. The trails started last October 14th, - and court eat fro 220 days and haired 1068 witnesses. The court sentenced fourteen other people to life imprisonment. Mr. Menderes was the man who escaped death when his aircraft crashed near Gatwick in 1959 -killing of his staff and crew. He was found wandering in a surrey wood after the Orash by local Mrs. Margaret Bailey - who locked after him until help came - as a result of which she her husband and two children were given three weeks holiday in Turkey by Mr. Menders and his government.
