Feb. 02, 1966 - COUP IN SYRIA. ARMY IN POWER'. A military coup in Syria early today toppled the Baathist Government of President Amin Al Hafez and Premier Salah Eddin Bitar, according to a Damascus radio broadcast heard in Beirut. The radio ordered a curfew until further notice and closure of all borders. The radio announced the arrest of members of the Government, including the President and the Prime Minister, and the Baathist Party founder, Michel Aflaq. There was no word of any casualties.
