Aug. 17, 1970 - Drought hits south Eastern Turkey. Searching heat, cracked and dried field, and peasants crying for water, are the main features of the backward regions of south eastern Anatolia this summer. Water, as essential to life, is the most valuable thing nowadays in thousands of village, is the most valuable thing eastern Anatolian regions of Merdin, Pakkari, Urfa, etc. with not a drop of rain falling, and river beds dried up, Turkey's south east is suffering a severs drought. The villagers, and even city dwellers cannot find water to drink, let alone wash and bathe. In come villages, the peasants attempt collectively to obtain water by digging wells and then appealing to the government to provide them with tankers to bring water from long distances so that they can ration among the inhabitants.
