Feb. 02, 1972 - The Cypriot President Archbishop Makarios shakes hands with US Congressman Edward P. Beard, Democrat Rhode Island, who was visiting Cyprus. The US Congressman was banned by the Turks from entering the occupied region of the island and Turks with machine-guns threatened him in the Turkish section of Nicosia. Congressman Beard has said he would oppose the resumption of US military aid to Turkey
