Oct. 10, 1965 - The New Philharmonia Orchestra Plays At Grand Gala Concert In Amsterdam: The new Philharmonia Orchestra gave the annual concert of the Grand Gala Du Disque, in Amsterdam, last night, and was the first British Orchestra to play in the concert, an international organisation backed by the major recording companies which makes the Edison Awards from Gramophone records. Roughly equivalent to Oscars in films. It is the first time any British Orchestra has been invited to perform at the concert, which is one of the most coveted events in music each year. The orchestra was conducted by Carl Maria Giulini who, during the concert, received an Edison Award for his recording of Verdi's Requiem, made with Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus. The concert programme included works recorded by Maestro Giulini and the Orchestra, Mozart and Rossini, sung by Rita Streich, Three dances from the Three Cornered Hat (De Falla), the Max Bruch Violin Concerto, played by Arthur Grumiaux, and Benjamin Britten's Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Purcell Photo Shows: L-R with their Edison Awards: Arthur Grumiaux, Carl Maria Giulini, and Rita Streich
