Jun. 06, 1957 - Largest Radio Telescope in the World for Scientific Research into the Atmosphere: The largest Radio Telescope in the World was shown to the press yesterday for the first time. Built at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire for Manchester University at a cost of about650, 000 it consists of a gigantic copper mesh bowl weighing 750 tons suspended between 180ft. towers. Funds for its construction were provided by the Department of Scientific Research and the Nuffield Foundation. The diameter of the bowl is 250ft. and the aerial masts 62ft. high. The total weight of its moving parts is 2, 000 tons. It is used by scientists for the investigation of the arrival of meteors into the earth atmosphere the behaviour of the aurora borlis etc. Photo shows Professor A.C.B.
