Nov. 02, 1964 - 2-11-64 Life and death of an astronaut American astronaut Ted Freeman spent two years reaching for the moon but he died this weekend in a Texas oilfield. Captain Freeman the first astronaut to die, had taken part in survival tests in the Nevada desert, the Panama Jungle and shark infested seas of Florida. He had learned how to walk on the moon surface. But his end came when his jet plane crashed on a routine flight. Freeman 34 year old Air Force man from Philadelphia, was being trained for America next two-man Gemini space shot in the Spring. and for the Apollo project to put a man on the moon.
