Nov. 11, 1964 - Life And Death - Of An Astronaut: American astronaut Ted Freeman spent two years reaching for the moon - but he died this week-end in a Texas oilfield. Captain Freeman the first astronaut to die, had taken part in survival tests in the Nevada desert, the Panama jungle and shark-ingested seas off Florida. He had learned how to walk on the Moon's surface. But his end came when his Jet plane crashed on a routine flight. Freeman - 34 year old Air Force man from Philadelphia, was being trained for America's next two-man Geminis space shot in the Apring - and for the Apollo project to put a man on the moon. - he hoped the man might be him.
