May 05, 1967 - The Biggest telescope in western Europe. The finishing touches are being put to the giant telescope, named Sir Asaac Newton - at the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Hurstmoneeaux, Sussex. It is the biggest telescope in western Europe - it's moving Paris weigh 87 tons. The telescope's mirror - a disc of glass 8ft. 2ins. wide - will collect light from stars and galaxies millions of miles out in space - and focus it on to photographic plates.
