May 05, 1967 - The biggest telescope in Western Europe: The finishing touches are being put to the giant telescope, named Sir Asaas Newton at the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Hurstmonceaux, Sussex. It is the biggest telescope in Western Europe - it's moving parts weigh 87 tons. The telescope's mirror a disc of glass 8ft 2inc. wide will collect light from stars and galaxies millions of miles out in Space and focus it on to photographic plates. The mirror is accurate to a millionth of an inch. Photo shows view of the Prime focus section of the telescope
